Pre-spring planting starts now
I saw them this week, those botanical objects of desire: the new bulbs that must be planted soon if you want a spring garden filled with colour. The only problem is, the temptation is to buy way too much.
When I began to garden, and first learned of the magic of planting things in October that ould wmiraculously appear in April after 6 months of brutish Canadian winter, I couldn't seem to stop myself from buying tulips in every shade and shape, especially striped ones.
Daffodils that were peach or white was another weakness--as was anything blue. From scillas to irises to crocuses to hyacinthes, I would just load up a dozen of everything and head back home.
Well, as I soon found out, planting a couple of hundred or so bulbs can take time, hurt your back and put you in need of a lengthy defrosting in a hot bath afterwards. I would inevitably find myself not planting some of the bulbs, or throwing some out--or keeping them ready to plant "tomorrow" until they dried out and were useless. So I'm a little more prudent now when buying bulbs--though it's hard when so many fantastically varied tulips and daffs are out there.
