"In the winter we all want to be able to touch something that is beautiful, blooming and live," said Rick Pudwell, director of horticulture at the Botanic Garden.
Pudwell, who is known for his arrangements of cut flowers, also has a knack for pairing potted plants with unlikely containers, collectibles and household items.
Tuesday night he gave members of the Memphis Horticultural Society a preview of what they will find at the sale.
"I like to hit junk stores and houseware departments to find items," Pudwell said. "And we also get a lot of stuff donated to us."
A wooden sprinkling can, for instance, now holds a red blooming bromeliad.
"Bromeliads are great because they bloom for two or three months," Pudwell said. Just be sure the plant's roots are not sitting in water. "They grow in the crotch of tropical trees so their roots never stay wet."
The striped whirling foliage of jade jewel, a Dracaena, is spectacular enough to need little assistance from a fancy container or companion plants. But it looks great on the seat of a throw-away chair that has been painted brick red.
