October marks the start of the gardening year but make sure you take the proper precautions as the garden can be a dangerous place
IT'S OCTOBER and the start of the gardening year in Cyprus. So it's time for you to get back out there and do some serious gardening again before the clocks change at the end of the month and the evenings are no more. However, watch out as the garden is full of hazards and regarded as one of the most dangerous places to work in! The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in the UK states that there are over 300,000 accidents in UK gardens each year. Now if those statistics applied to Cyprus it would mean that about one in two people would be injured in someway in their gardens each year!
The main culprits are men as they are the ones who, generally speaking, wield the heavy machines about. You don't see many women totting hedge cutters, or long handled loppers or even lawn movers about here – there are not that many lawns for one reason! The guys stand on the topmost rungs of tall ladders to prune the high branches of trees and really should have someone to hold the ladder steady – but they can't wait for that. Here older men seem to lose control of tractors as they drive over rough territory and turn them over, usually fatally. There was a case recently when an elderly American gardener stumbled and fell onto his secateurs which entered his eye cavity and it was only with the skill of the surgeons that they were extracted without further injury. Some years ago, the husband of a friend of mine put a garden fork through his shoe and pierced his toes, which caused him much discomfort and many tetanus injections! So it is a hazardous place.
