But this is the John Waters: cult director, writer, artist and longtime provocateur. So where is the freakishness? Where are the drag queens? Where, most important, is the famous electric chair he owns? This looks like the home of any cultured, art-obsessed, tasteful New Yorker. I'm almost relieved when my host helpfully points out a creepily lifelike taxidermied dog and cat, curled up as if they're just about to wake from a long sleep. That's more like it.
The thing is, Waters isn't that interested in shocking for the sake of it. Maybe back in the days when he was a struggling artist willing to try anything to get attention, but he's a respectable 63-year-old now, supremely comfortable in his own skin. He's as dapper as ever, in that slightly nefarious, Vegas lounge lizard kind of way.
He's dressed in an olive turtleneck, hair combed neatly across his scalp, brown eyes sparkling, sporting the trademark moustache that looks as though a tipsy artist has traced a fine black line above his lip.
