Fall Bulbs for Spring Blooms

Now is the time to start thinking about planting bulbs for spring color. Garden centers and big box stores will soon have walls of cartons with all kinds of enticing pictures.

How does one decide what to buy? So many things to think about; color, height, bloom time, whether to experiment with the unfamiliar? Over the years I have put in hundreds of bulbs and I’d love to share some things I learned.

The bulbs you plant this fall have been engineered to give you a great display next spring. Whether the bulb will come up in consecutive years depends on what you plant.

Tulips are the most popular choice but most need to be replanted every year. I’ve planted Darwin Hybrids, Triumphs, single earlies and parrot tulips. I get one great year, a second OK year, then it starts to get dicey; maybe they’ll come back, maybe they’ll come back puny. My favorite is the Darwin Hybrid because they usually provide two years of great-looking flowers.
