Large and beautiful tulip poplar is no longer unfamiliar

The six-petaled cupped flowers bear some resemblance to tulips, and, curiously, the tree’s big leaves bear some resemblance to the tulip shapes I drew as a kid.

Also known as tulip tree and yellow poplar, it is a member of the magnolia family and not a poplar at all. Interestingly, the “tulips” are a major source of a dark, reddish honey in the southern Appalachians. A sweet nectar produced by the plant draws insect pollinators to the tree, including honey bees.

Tulip poplar’s native range extends over most of the eastern part of the United States, especially the Southeast, being most common in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. That explains why I didn’t recognize it. It does grow in Missouri, and I pass a beautiful specimen on one of my regular daily routes. It prefers moderately moist, well-drained, loosely textured soils — another reason it isn’t a common sight in these parts.

The tulip poplar is a rapidly growing species and is one of the largest trees in North America, reaching heights exceeding 100 feet with a potential trunk diameter of 5 feet or more, so it is not an ideal specimen for the average homeowner’s yard. There are a number of cultivars that aren’t quite as colossal. Compact forms include only grows to 60 feet in height and features a crown spread of only about 20 feet.
