For years, St. Augustine grass has been the lawn of choice of homeowners in Northeast Florida, but some want a change. Maybe they want a lawn with a finer texture or one that doesn't get chinch bugs. Whatever the reason, zoysia grass is gaining in popularity.
Some of the benefits of Zoysia over St. Augustine are that Zoysia doesn't get chinch bugs and it is tolerant of a wider selection of herbicides. The grasses respond to drought differently. Both have moderate drought tolerance, but Zoysia can wilt quickly when it dries out and after a week or two will go dormant. St. Augustine grass also wilts but will retain some green grass blades for a longer period of time.
Zoysia grasses arrived in the United States from Asia in the early 1900s and have recently become a more desirable grass because of successful breeding programs. Several varieties have performed well in Florida trials but are limited in availability.
Two new varieties developed by the University of Florida are PristineFlora and UltimateFlora. PristineFlora is a high-maintenance variety for high-end landscapes. It is fine textured, very dense and dark green in color. UltimateFlora is a good choice for Florida lawns, has a coarser texture than PristineFlora and spreads more quickly than many other Zoysia varieties. Over time, availability of these may improve.

Why I'm Still Glad John McCain Lost in 2008 Why I'm Still Glad John McCain Lost in 2008Liberalism in the Republican party has become like zoysia grass. It grows slow enough you can't actually see it, but fast enough that if you ignore it for even a short time, it becomes unmanageable. And, once it has taken root, it continues to grow |

Too early for Bermuda grass? I would like to have a Bermuda grass lawn. Is it too early to put out seed? This is a great time of year to put out Bermuda grass or other warm season grass -- centipede, St. Augustine or Zoysia -- seed or sod. I would recommend testing your soil so and more » |
