Corn is in season now and I've seen it as inexpensive as ten ears for ten dollars, and usually it is six for $20! I'm eating fresh corn and loving it.
Corn originated in the Western Hemisphere. Around 6000 BC the inhabitants of Mexico probably grew the first corn! Corn is unique from other grains since scientists do not know how the plant evolved. It is believed to have evolved only in the West, domesticated from a wild grass called Balsas teosinte. Between 1700 and 1250 BC, Amerindians spread corn through much of North and South America. The Spanish called this vegetable maíz after Amerindian Taino mahiz. In English it is known as corn or mielie/mealie which means kernel. Explorers carried corn to many parts of the world and it is used nearly everywhere today, often as feed grain for animals. Corn is considered by botanists to be a grain, not a vegetable, and originally had very small ears. Corn has been genetically altered to be much larger and sweeter tasting. Grits are small broken grains of corn.
