The hot, dry weather is causing most of us to feel stressed and worried about our gardens and landscapes. I thought today we would talk a bit about that, and maybe talking about it will help us relax and do what we can to protect and preserve the plants around our homes.

We had a very dry summer last year, and many of the perennials in my garden seemed to die. They came back this spring, so I learned from that experience that perennials will sometimes protect themselves by going dormant and that I should continue to water them because their roots still need to be hydrated to survive.

♦Grass will go dormant but will come back when late summer and fall rains begin.

♦If you planted grass seed this spring, continue to water that area of the lawn. New grass that isn't well-established will die out if not kept watered.
