I received a little e-mail tip this week that another golf course in the desert (we’ll just let it stay unnamed for the time being) has decided to move to an overseeding concept that will see rye grass planted on just tees, fairways and greens.
What makes this interesting is that the tees, fairways and greens idea –I call it the Tucson look because it’s a popular idea on Arizona courses — has been gaining momentum in the Coachella Valley over the last few years, and not because courses think the look is so cool.
In reality, the tees, fairways and greens idea is a way for golf courses to save money, and they way things are heading these days, saving money is a pretty good idea for any business.
For the uninitiated, overseeding is the process of switching golf courses in the desert from the Bermuda grass that stays green in the summer to the rye grass that stays green in the winter. Bermuda goes dormant and brown in the winter, and rye just dies out in the summer heat.
Water, water . . . but only on the fairways?
