Like most mid-valley grass seed farmers, Telly Wirth was glad to be on his combine this week.
It has been a long wait for farmers. The extended rain and cool conditions have delayed the grass seed harvest throughout Linn County. Wirth is at least two weeks behind schedule.
“We started Saturday and we’re going slowly,” Wirth said. “We’re harvesting fields now that should have been done.”
Even now the days are “on the cool side of normal” according to Wirth, who farms 2,000 acres of grass seed, wheat and clover near Tangent. Wirth is tackling orchard grass and ryegrass right now, and he doesn’t know when the later turf grass crops will be ready.
The start is the latest Wirth has seen since he began farming. The 34-year-old figures if things go well from here on out he should be finished with his early harvest in a month or less.
Despite the weather, Wirth is expecting an average yield, maybe a bit below.
“I think we might have seen a better than average yield if the weather had cooperated,” he said.
