Some producers will be planting winter wheat for the first time this year on prevent plant acres.
But what varieties are best for their situation? And should some kind of cover crop be put in within the next week or so to establish some stubble to capture snow for winter cover?
“Each situation is unique,” said Hans Kandel, NDSU Extension agronomist at the North Central Research Extension Center south of Minot. “There’s problems with not being able to get into certain fields and what you plan to do with certain areas. Where there is a lot of moisture, what are you going to do?”
Kandel said the region used to fallow to conserve water for the next year, and producers may still want to do that, putting their winter wheat crop on little or no residue.
“We don’t know what the future is – will we need water next year?” he asked.
Yet next spring could be another wet one, and there are many negative effects to the soil biology with leaving the ground in fallow, he added.
