It looked like First Selectman William Brennan was bowling — or maybe curling — on the new stone dust court beside the Senior Center last week.
Actually, Mr. Brennan was playing a game of bocce ball with Steve Pierce, director of Parks and Recreation, and Tom Thurkettle, director of public works. The bocce court was just built by Callum Breene for his Eagle Scout project, and he is hoping to introduce the town to the ancient ball-rolling sport.
“It’s a great game, and everyone in town is welcome to play,” said Callum, a WHS sophomore.
“Bocce has become very popular,” said Mr. Brennan. “We are also hoping the new court will also help attract men to the Senior Center. Callum did a wonderful job.”
According to the U.S. Bocce Federation, the object of the game is to roll two-pound ceramic balls down the 75-foot-long court, aiming for a smaller ball called a pallino. Players also aim for existing shots, knocking them closer or farther away. The popularity of bocce in the U.S. has been on the rise, and there now more than “25,000,000 bocce enthusiasts” participating in the sport, which is especially popular in Italy.
