How To Grow Grass Seed - The Basics

Today I talk about growing grass seed. I am NOT, however, talking about methods for growing grass seed... rather, giving you 3 universal truths ...

Carr says that in sunny places, the park crew plants perennial ryegrass , but under the shade trees the crew uses a mix of perennial ryegrass and hard fescue .

I asked whether vendors gripe about chipping in for grass care. Carr smiles. “I think they know they have a good deal here. This is not a regular park.”
 
After each event, the park crew spends at least two days passing a 6-foot magnet over the ground to collect nails, bolts, bottle caps and other metal bits.

Then the crew removes soil contaminated with oil or other grass-killing fluids. The area is backfilled, aerated and reseeded.

The base of the park’s turf is sand, which drains quickly and doesn’t turn to mud. (The one-mile oval of Portland Meadows is made of sand for the same reason.) Sweeping his arm over the ground, Carr points out that over the years, a top layer of dirt, leaves and other organic matter has built up, and it has to be removed.
