Be nutrient wise and make savings
Jess Buss, BGS director, says the demonstrations are designed to ‘challenge thinking’, particularly about working with clover.
“They are not research plots, they are demonstrations of what research looks like,” she says. “When farmers visit we ask them to look for clover, dig holes and measure grass.”
Four methods of introducing clover to existing swards are demonstrated at the site and costed, although Ms Buss says the results are not definitive:
Three passes of a grass harrow and broadcasting seed with a fourth pass of the harrow: £100 per ha (£40 per acre). Drag harrowing then broadcasting seed: £85 (£34). Mixing seed with slurry and spreading it from a tanker: £43 (£17). Direct drilling: £58 (£19).“They key aim is to get farmers to do something like this,” she says. “We’re not saying any of these methods do or don’t work but we want farmers to starting thinking about it. It’s all about the cost benefit.”
The nitrogen saving for each of the plots is calculated to be £135 per ha (£55 per acre) when there is a 30 per cent clover content in the sward.
