TANGENT — A partnership with a Portland-area bakery could help mid-valley grain producers take the next step toward building a healthy local food system.

A few years ago, a handful of area farmers started converting some of their grass seed acreage to grain production with the aim of raising organic food crops for local consumption. But in order to scale up production to profitable levels, they knew they would have to broaden their customer base.

“We weren’t interested in growing 10 acres of wheat to sell to an occasional hippie in Corvallis,” said Willow Coberly of Stalford Seed Farms near Tangent, one of the instigators of a coalition of like-minded growers called Willamette Seed & Grain LLC.

In her quest for new customers, Coberly contacted NatureBake, the Milwaukie company that has built a devoutly loyal following among Northwest foodies with its beyond-hearty Dave’s Killer Bread product line.

“It was perfect timing,” said Shobi Dahl, Dave’s nephew and vice president of family-owned NatureBake.
