Too early for Bermuda grass?

-- Andrew W. Athens

This is a great time of year to put out Bermuda grass or other warm season grass -- centipede, St. Augustine or Zoysia -- seed or sod. I would recommend testing your soil so you can provide your plants with the best possible soil conditions. Most Bermuda grass needs full sun and is very drought tolerant once established.

In preparation for the new seed or sod, make sure all weeds or current seeds are dead.

Then till the soil, incorporating fertilizer or compost to a depth of at least 6 inches, and rake the area smooth. If possible, roll the area to find low spots in the soil and fill these spots with soil to create an even planting area. Rake again, water the soil, and spread seeds or place sod.

Seeding a lawn is a quick process, but it takes the most amount of time to establish in relation to sodding, plugging or sprigging. Seed usually is spread at a rate of 1 pound per thousand square feet and should be covered in straw and watered.
