Rock Hall nominations: GNR before Deep Purple?
Before the week ends, a few words about this annual ritual people insist they don't care about (but maybe secretly do): the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees.
This year's noms, announced Monday, are: Beastie Boys, The Cure, Donovan, Eric B. & Rakim, Guns 'N Roses, Heart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Freddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rufus with Chaka Khan, The Small Faces/The Faces, The Spinners, Donna Summer, War.
My one word reaction is .... blah.
In March 2010, I offered my wish list for "The Next Dozen": Rush, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Yes, Tom Waits, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Kiss, The Runaways, Afrika Bambaataa, The Specials and Joy Division.
Since then, Alice Cooper and Tom Waits got in, which is great. Now we're looking at the prospect of Guns 'N Roses and Heart going in before Rush and Deep Purple. Were Heart and GNR more innovative or influential? Did they have more good songs? Not really.
I like the Spinners, for the Philly sound of "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love." Of all the options in the punk/post-punk scene, The Cure seems like an odd choice over Joy Division, but they were the more commercial band.
