Autumn event at San Jose Heritage Rose Garden
One rose surprises passers-by with its unusual apple fragrance.
Another was named after a long-ago TV show starring Audrey Hepburn.
Many were found growing in old or long-neglected California cemeteries.
And all have been nursed and propagated by the South Bay Heritage Rose Group.
Saturday, the group will join with the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy to present "Autumn in the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden," a free event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will combine lectures and demonstrations with the sale of a limited number of rare varieties of heritage as well as some modern roses. The sale starts at 9, followed by an 11 a.m. lecture on rose hips, a noon session on composting with worms and a 1 p.m. lecture on propagating roses.
What's the appeal of heritage roses?
"They're survivors," says garden curator Jill Perry, who notes that many have been grown from plant cuttings taken in abandoned properties or old cemeteries. "They've gotten no care for 50, 60 years. They can survive without summer watering or fertilizing or people amending the garden soil. Some are quite disease-resistant. And a lot of them are really fragrant."
