Mon amie la rose, Francoise Hardy

Ah, the romance of roses. Only trouble is, it’s a love affair that often goes sour. In my clayey, windswept garden northwest of Toronto, I’ve had very little success with these flowers. Even the tough Explorer and Morden roses, developed in Manitoba, have performed here like sulky kids. So much so, I tend to agree with the late great British gardener Christopher Lloyd who called roses “nasty, prickly things, prone to disease and bugs — and not worth bothering with.” Sorry, rosarians.
But now, amazingly, I’ve actually fallen for a rose. What’s more, it’s Canadian — and there’s a poignant story attached to its origins.
My new-found amour is the Michel Trudeau rose, named after the youngest son of Pierre and Margaret Trudeau who whose life was tragically cut short by an avalanche in a British Columbia national park back in 1998. Someone gave me a tiny sample of this rose three years ago — and I shoved the pathetic-looking thing into the ground expecting nothing much. Yet surprise. This specimen has developed, with no help from me, into a fair-sized bush, which produced a bevy of shocking pink blooms this spring, a few more throughout the summer, and still more a few weeks ago. And they smell delicious.
