Everything's Coming Up Roses, Except for Gold and Silver
Risk appetites and/or dead cats are bouncing hard this morning. Gold and silver did not get the invite, apparently.
Dow futures are up 126 points, S&P futures are up 16 points and Nasdaq futures are up about 22 points, because blah blah blah Europe something or other.
Treasurys are getting sold off hard, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 1.85% — still an astonishingly low number!
Even crude oil is up today, with Nymex crude back above $80 a barrel and Brent at about $105.
Gold and silver continue to suffer from Friday’s increase in CME margin requirements, an after-the-bell event that several psychic traders were inexplicably able to forecast and trade heavily on all day on Friday. Somebody call Leonard Nimoy .
Gold briefly plunged as far as $1540 an ounce in the wee hours of the morning, but has actually come roaring back to be down only slightly at about $1630.
Commerzbank analysts take the opportunity this morning to say they told you so about gold — never pass up such an opportunity! — but that the selling earlier this morning maybe went a little too far:
