This session is far from routine; this is only the second time in Mrs. Obama's year as first lady that she has met for an on-the-record session with a group of journalists. The other was Sept. 28, before she departed for Copenhagen to pitch Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Mrs. Obama was wearing over-the-knee brown Jimmy Choo boots without nylons -- she hates stockings -- and was sporting a shorter hair-do, evidence of a recent haircut.
A butler was standing by at another table to serve coffee, cranberry juice and orange juice, with an assortment of cookies, scones and cakes on a tray. Except for the butler, everyone else in the room with Mrs. Obama -- reporters and her East Wing staffers -- were female.
After a year of getting her footing -- "figuring out the job" as she put it -- and settling her family into their White House home, Mrs. Obama is ready to take things up to another level in 2010.
