Peonies add color, but need sun

September and October are peony months in the garden, not for bloom display, but to transplant or add one of the most dependable flowers to grow in a sunny spot. Peonies planted during the next four weeks grow considerable roots during this time period and will mature faster. Blooming from early to late-May, they add a reliable, spectacular display of blooms that will brighten any landscape.

Peonies offer spring color and upright green shrublike foliage that will last until the first frost. Gardeners often use this foliage as fillers in floral arrangements or to conceal the long, lanky stems of Asiatic and Oriental lilies planted near the perimeter.

Each year, the peony market expands with more plants available in a range of color and color combinations. From snowy white to deep burgundy, the market teems with names that are hard to ignore — Ursa Major, Green Lotus, Do Tell, Tom Cat, and Star Power.

Peonies need full-sun meaning at least six hours per day. Each year I receive questions from readers who are perplexed by declining blooms over a period of two to three years. Stand back and survey the area. What was once a young, open landscape is now a mature lawn with established trees, fences, and shrubs — all shade producers. Peonies planted near the home's foundation will be in shade at least part of the day.
