September to early October is the best time to divide them for sharing or moving to another place in the garden. Cut the foliage back to make the plant easier to work with, which will allow the energy for the new division to go to the roots and not top growth when planted. Pulling a plant out of dry soil requires less effort, so wait until there have been a few days without rain to lift out the entire clump with a garden fork.
Now, simply divide the peony with a sharp garden shovel into three to four pieces, discarding old woody central parts. If the clump is very old, it may take two shovels or forks back-toback to pry it apart.
Ensure each new division has at least two to three eyes, or buds that will be producing the flowers for the following season. Sprinkle a little bone meal into the planting hole, as it has a high phosphate content that promotes root development and flower production. Cover the roots with 3.5 to 5 centimetres of soil, but no deeper than this, or the plant will not bloom.
