Phoenix orchid shows spotlight plant's diversity
"I got my first orchid 62 years ago," says Julie Rathbun, president of the group. "My mother bought it for me. She worked in a florist's shop for 19 years. I fell in love with them there -- the coloring of them, the way they are formed, the petals."
The childhood gift has blossomed into a love of orchids that now fills a greenhouse next to Rathbun's home in north Phoenix.
She's out there daily to water, trim and otherwise nurture plants that go by such names as Chief Sweet Orange Sweet Orange, Sorcerer's Apprentice and Cattleya hybrid.
Rathbun, 66, has 40 orchids in various stages of growth in her greenhouse, but she has made room to store the 200 plants for the upcoming show and sale. The Desert Valley Orchid Society is also staging a show and sale next weekend.
Inside the home of the Phoenix native, five orchids are bathed by a mister as they hang in an aquarium.
"Humidity is very important," she explains.
Wilella Stimmell, treasurer and past president of the society, says each variety of orchid has its own quirks when it comes to things like humidity and temperature.
