Rare Orchid Blooms at Ball State University
The Wheeler Orchid Collection had rare Bucket Orchids blooming in the fall of 2009. For a class assignment, I captured the event.
Giant spider orchid found
YABBERUP locals spotted rare giant spider orchids on a wildflower walk in bush near the Yabberup Hall at the weekend — but were disappointed at the amount of litter in the forest.The splendid white spider orchids are the larger and less- seen cousins of the smaller, but just as spectacular, spider orchids.
The walk was organised by the Yabberup Community Association and attracted 21 walkers.
Wildflower enthusiast Sherry Thomas said while there was not the carpet of wildflowers experienced in spring up north, there was a lot more diversity in the Yabberup area.
“My grandmother gave me my interest in wildflowers as a kid,” Sherry said.
“I got seriously into it after we bought this property in 1993. I went for some bushwalks and began to identify flowers, and after I found some unusual orchids, started to get interested in orchids in particular.”
While walkers were happy to spot a diverse range of flowers, they were less impressed with the garbage in the forest
