Fine living: Exotic orchids offer color splash
Want more love and harmony at home and work? Surround yourself with pink ("never white!") Phalaenopsis orchids, says Elizabeth Zipern, marketing director of Sloat Garden Center. "In this coming Year of the Tiger, the pink orchid also brings extra good luck."Unfortunately, this advice probably comes a little too late for one Tiger in the news recently, but just in time for St. Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year and shoppers at Sloat Garden Center's second annual Orchid Festival from Feb. 1 to 14. All stores will offer more specialty orchids than usual, orchid sale prices, an orchid-a-month contest and orchid lectures and demonstrations.
It's the orchid's exotic nature and hint of grandeur that accounts for much of its popularity, Zipern says, but on a more a practical level, it adds color and warmth during the winter months and, unlike many others, lasts a long time.
