At least $750000 damage to Hampshire plant nursery
HAMPSHIRE — Damage was estimated at $750,000, but the final total could be even higher, from an early-morning fire Tuesday at Klehm Growers plant nursery and farm near Route 72 and Brier Hill Road, officials said.
About 50 percent of the complex was damaged, but no one was injured during the blaze, said Capt. Trevor Herrmann of the Hampshire Fire Protection District.
A passing motorist called 911 just before 5 a.m. to report the blaze, Herrmann said. Firefighters arriving at the scene found flames coming from the rear of one of the greenhouse sections, he said.
Firefighters from 18 area departments helped battle the blaze, which was raised to a four-alarm fire around 6:30 a.m., according to a firefighter at the Hampshire fire district. The fire finally was brought under control about 7:15 a.m., Herrmann said.
Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, water to battle the blaze was brought in by tanker trucks from 11 of those area departments, he said, adding that about 30,000 gallons of water were dumped onto the buildings.
