Nicole Engel did just that and became so enamored with the place that she started a tourism company focusing on the Central American country called Absolute Experts of Costa Rica.
For starters, the country is an ecological paradise, featuring 9,000 species of flowering plants, 1,200 varieties of orchids, more than 850 recorded species of birds (that’s more than in the United States, Canada and Mexico combined), 205 species of mammals and 1,500 tree species.
Even though the country is about the size of West Virginia, Costa Rica accounts for 5 percent of the world’s biodiversity. The landscape includes lush valleys, massive volcanoes, mountains, rolling hills, plains and 761 miles of combined coastline on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
The Caribbean coast is mostly lowland areas filled with sandy beaches and lined with palm trees and mangroves. The Pacific coast boasts world-class beaches and is renowned for diving, surfing and fishing.
