A time to honor Lt. Shuhandler

By Monday afternoon, there wasn't much to mark the spot where Lt. Eric Shuhandler died. A vase of white lillies, a few daffodils, their stems wrapped in aluminium foil, and a child's handmade card covered the asphalt where he fell. Two candles flickered there in the middle of a shopping center parking lot, in the middle of a safe suburban city where such things just don't happen.

Or so we allowed ourselves to believe. We, the ones who get up in the morning and are fairly certain that no one will be shooting at us before the day is done. We, the ones who are lucky enough to be able to expect ordinary days.

Police officers and their families don't have that luxury.

Today, they will gather to bury another brave man who died too soon. Lt. Shuhandler was killed on Thursday evening after pulling over a pickup truck for an obstructed license plate. He approached the truck, knowing that the passenger inside might be trouble, but he did it anyway.

Eric Shuhandler was the second Gilbert police officer to die in the line of duty, the first in the city's 91-year history to be shot.
