Despite the icy weather in our area, your garden can be aromatic during February. Three plants that come to mind when I think of fragrance in February are Breath of Spring, Daphne odora and Wintersweet. I hope you will have the pleasure of coming across them this month.
On my plant collecting adventures, I find many flowers are listed as fragrant, but it is hard to call some fragrant when the scent is so slight. The more likely they are to perfume the garden, the more I want to make sure I have them planted. Some would say too many different species in one garden is not the prettiest concept, but I cannot help myself when I see, and often smell, a new and interesting plant.
Breath of Spring is a woody shrub that used to be in most Southern gardens. At this time of year, it was the first thing I would smell in my backyard when I was a child growing up in Eastern North Carolina. It has gone out of favor now and is harder to find in a garden center. Although it is considered to be invasive, I have had my plants for about 30 years, and they are still in the same place and have not been invasive at all. If you have the space, it can grow close to 7 feet tall, but you should seek it out for its sweet smelling flowers.
