Record warmth means early blooms; but will spring be a bust?
SEATTLE - Look around in any Western Washington neighborhood and you'll see the colors of spring blooming in the heart of winter, thanks to what forecasters say is shaping up to be the warmest January on record.
"I've seen crocus in bloom, and even the daffodils are coming up," said KING 5 gardening guru Ciscoe Morris, "and that is pretty early."
Depending on your take, you can blame - or thank - el Nino, which brings unusually warm water to the Pacific Ocean. Scientists say the phenomenon is likely to extend into spring.
Ciscoe Morris has a less scientific take on these early blooms.
"They are all confused because they froze their little hinders off. Now we've had all this warm weather and they think it's spring," he said.
Ciscoe says the good news is our landscaping should survive any cold snaps.
It is a different story for those who make a living of the blossoms of spring.
In the Skagit Valley, the calendar says late January, but the raspberry bushes at Biringer Farms say early March.
