Cullen: Plant tulips now for springtime show

The most popular spring-flowering plant by far is the tulip. This may be hard for us to understand, given that they are a favourite meal of squirrels, they generally lack fragrance and you must wait six to seven months for them to perform in your garden after planting.
But — and there is always a but — there are redeeming features of the storied tulip that push them up the scale of desirability, where they mount the pinnacle of popularity as they have done in Canada and abroad for many years.
The tulip is extremely winter hardy and a reliable spring bloomer that takes the abuse of late fall planting. The family is diverse, tulips lend themselves well to cutting and, as any Dutch person can tell you, they are edible (though not recommended for this purpose).
Here is why you should consider investing some time and money this Thanksgiving weekend into the planting of tulips around your property:
