Community centre will bloom to support those living with cancer

It was a dreary and cold morning but the sun began to poke out from behind the clouds as about 40 supporters gathered to plant the 8th Daffodil Garden of Hope in front the community centre Saturday.

"We're all just living with hope," Sheila Hirsch told the crowd before people spread out to begin planting the 4,000 daffodil bulbs in support of family members with cancer and in memory of those who have lost the battle.

A survivor of cancer herself, Hirsch said it is important to create something beautiful for future generations.

But more importantly, the gardens are meant to represent hope for families living with cancer.

"These gardens will be enjoyed for many years to come. The daffodils will come up each year with every generation and they will still be here when most of us are not."

In honour of the 1812 Bicentennial and its celebrations, the opening of the garden in the spring will see both American and Canadians at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
