Cool weather brings many chores for yard

When you get finished, there’s a ton of English ivy that continues to plot world domination, starting with our backyard, where I will have – ivy be darned – a flowering shrub line to highlight the new favorite, a cherry tree.

Fall is the perfect time to divide and transplant the perennials, but we’re going to talk more about that next week in preparation of the Oct. 22 Columbia County plant sale. (Mark the calendar because it’s a great way to get new plants cheap.)

October is also pansy month. I don’t know about you, but I’ve missed their happy little faces. We should probably wait another week, maybe two or three is fine, but you can go ahead and prepare their beds and pots with an extra helping of organic material. Remember, pansies need special food, so stock up if you depleted your supply from last year.

Other annuals can share the stage this time of year. If you didn’t nurse snapdragons through the summer, you can add them now for winter and spring popping colors.
