The Washington Park Arboretum is a living, giving treasure
IS IT A CITY park or a living museum? Washington Park Arboretum is both, a 230-acre green heart at the center of our city.
But until a story like the one of vandals cutting down a rare tree made the national news in December, we forget what a rare treasure we have. Why aren't we more tuned in to an arboretum that was designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers and is full of world-renowned plant collections?
The Arboretum's hydra-headed administration doesn't help. The city of Seattle owns the land, the University of Washington owns and manages the plant collections, and the nonprofit Arboretum Foundation raises money to support the place. City and university crews work on the grounds, and foundation and university staff share the buildings. You can imagine . . .
Plus the Arboretum, with its fragile waterfront and wetlands along Lake Washington, is facing significant effects from the Highway 520 bridge-expansion project. Thank goodness the splendid trees and shrubs continue to thrive no matter how much we humans muddle about.
