Dulcy Mahar: Small trees can give huge satisfaction
This column originally ran in the Sept. 28, 2006, Homes & Gardens of the Northwest.I'm a firm believer that nothing stamps a garden as one's own as much as planting a tree. Not only does it demonstrate faith in the future, but it also shows a generosity of spirit. It says you are willing to invest in something that another generation (or maybe a subsequent owner of your home) may enjoy even more than you.
If all that do-good symbolism doesn't get you, there's the fortunate fact that many trees will grow sufficiently fast to give you, if not immediate satisfaction, at least reasonably swift satisfaction.
Since most gardeners these days live on ever-shrinking lots, smaller ornamental trees that peak around 25 feet are enjoying great popularity. A point in favor of small trees is that they tend to give dappled shade rather than heavy shade. Dappled shade will allow you to plant under your tree, especially lovely little spring bulbs.
