Magnolia Springs man charged with running marijuana-growing house
Leon Hotchkiss, 56, was charged with trafficking marijuana. Bail for this charge has been set at $1 million, officials said. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail for that charge was set at $1,000, officials said.Sheriff officials said that drug task force officers went to a house in the 6000 block of Magnolia Springs Highway and when they got there, they found 76 marijuana plants inside the residence and in a shed that had been converted into a growing house.
The plants were in different stages of maturity but most were about two weeks from being mature enough to harvest, Maj. Anthony Lowery, sheriff's department spokesman, said in the release.
Hotchkiss was living in the house, Lowery said. No children were living there, he said.
Lowery said that Hotchkiss told authorities that he was growing the plants because he was out of work and needed money.
Officials said that the marijuana had a total weight of about 12 pounds. Hotchkiss was also found in possession of a handgun and scales, officials said.
