Rift delays plans for former Japanese school
SWEETWATER, Tenn. — A former Japanese high school in Monroe County remains empty and without utilities in the wake of a tumultuous leadership takeover within the organization that received the campus, valued at $8.6 million, as a gift last year.
Tennessee Meiji Gakuin high school, located on the 144-acre campus of a former military academy, was given by the Japanese owners to the new Sweet Water Sustainability Institute.
Since then, the people who spearheaded the effort to obtain TMG have been ousted from the institute's board of trustees.
"It was a hostile takeover with a very, very toxic lack of communications," said Scottie Cloninger of Sweetwater.
He and Tricia Mills Baehr are credited with obtaining the extraordinary gift. But they and other former members have been removed from the organization's board of trustees in a bitter and ongoing power struggle, records show.
"The thieves conspired to get rid of us for ego control of the project," Cloninger stated in an email.
