Frustrated Leland councilman drops bid to keep seat

Barnes is in his fourth year on the council. He was elected to his post in 2007.

The decision is one Barnes has been weighing for some time, he said.

"I made my decision close to a month ago, but because of the fact there are so many negative issues going on, I waited," he said.

Barnes said he'll leave feeling frustrated with the current town council, especially over the recent decisions about the town's community center.

"There are issues that I have brought up, and the council doesn't want to deal with them," the 70-year-old councilman said. "I feel if I continue on, I will be in the minority on the council and I will still not be able to get the issues I hold near and dear to me seen as favorable. I'm getting too old for this."

Barnes has been a proponent of using the current town hall building space for a community center after a new town hall is built. But the town plans to put the community center in a building it bought in Magnolia Greens.
