Lily a surprise bloomer as fall arrives
The surprise lily is correctly named. Its presence was a surprise to me, as it is every year, because I forget it’s there until each September when its bright red blooms appear.
These beautiful lilies were more of a surprise than usual this year because there they are in a bed that I had abandoned in the heat and drought of the last several weeks.
In my perennial bed, there are three small colonies — very small — of this lily, Lycoris Amaryllidaceae. You can detect by the name that it is a member of the amaryllis family, but the name surprise lily best describes it because it seems to bloom backward. Some varieties are known as spider lilies.
The new bulbs should be planted in the spring 4- to 6-inches deep and about 6 inches apart, or you can plant them in the fall after they bloom. Planting time will depend on when the bulbs are available. You may see them growing soon or it may be several months. It sometimes takes a year or so for them to establish a blooming cycle.
