It chaps me to give Pat Robertson any more press than he’s already gotten after his cruel, ridiculous and utterly sophomoronic (if I may coin a word) remarks about the earthquake in Haiti.
He seems to like the horrific attention this kind of thinking brings him. He worships the limelight as self-appointed Christian prophet, TV’s holy soothsayer with whom God supposedly shares His deepest and darkest secrets.
Of all the in-print reactions to Robertson’s latest blustering that the tragic earthquake is Haiti’s punishment for “selling their souls to the devil,” a letter to the editor of The Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune is the cleverest.
Robertson’s remarks on his 700 Club TV program included a blundering reference (watch part of it on YouTube) to the legend that Jean Jacques Dessalines, who led the Haitian revolution against the French Army, entered into a pact with Satan disguised as a voodoo deity in exchange for a military victory, which finally happened in 1803.
