Cornell University professor creates new species of lily: Tangerine Tango

Ithaca, NY -- While most folks have trouble programming their DVRs, a Cornell University professor has found a way to program nature.

Mark Bridgen, Cornell professor of horticulture and director of http://www.longislandhort.cornell.edu/ Cornell's Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center , spent eight years cross-breeding different species of lilies from Chile and Brazil to create "Tangerine Tango," an orange lily that thrives as a garden perennial or cut in a vase. Thanks to a long stem, it can survive two weeks in a vase of water. It's also hardy enough to survive winters in a Central New York garden.

The flower is so unique that Cornell University has applied to patent the plant with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The university has only once before applied for a plant patent with the U.S. government. It was granted in 2007, according to patent office spokesperson Ruth Nyblod. Bridgen was the creator of that plant, a mauve lily, as well.

The Tangerine Tango patent is still in the application process, said Cornell spokesman Blaine Friedlander.
