Urban Garden Plant Swap attracted big crowds in Savannah

You might not have know it existed if it were not for cars and trucks parked on every available bit of ground space on West Boundary Street between Chatham Steele and a inconspicuous red brick building owned by Savannah College of Art and Design.

Walking up on the garden for the first time, visitors might have thought they were invading a person’s side yard. There was no house around, but plenty of unique people, plants and pop art scattered about.

An old wire fence housed beads and skulls and trinkets. A strange red podded vine with yellow flowers and red centers loomed like an alien pod invader oozing blood. It turned out to be a Jamaican Sorrel plant and the red pods could be boiled down to make tea or a cranberry-like drink that a Jamaican couple said was often served with alcohol for Christmas.

An indigo plant brought over from Osabaw island looked more like a tall weed just feet from the busy highway.

Jane Fishman, a Savannah newspaper columnist and founder of the garden plot, which barely covers forty feet of space, was not sure which part of the plant was used to make indigo dye (according to a web search, the whole plant is used, but the dye can only be extracted by adding things to the plant and letting it ferment).
