A: Flowering dogwood is an upland species. Although it appreciates consistent moisture, it fails in saturated conditions or where the water table is high.
Sweet bay, Magnolia virginiana , would be a good substitute. Depending on which of the many cultivars you happen to plant, it may be more or less evergreen. Henry Hicks is among the most evergreen; Moonglow is largely deciduous. You can make your choice based on what you want the tree to look like in winter. Another lovely choice is buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis . Its fragrant balls of tightly packed flowers attract butterflies, and it is more shrub than tree, but it thrives in wet sites.
I have a Camellia oleifera hybrid, Winter's Star. When should this be pruned, and do you have any pruning tips?
Prune your camellia in early spring, just as the buds begin to swell. By that time, if we have a brutal winter, it will be clear which branches have been injured by cold. Fight any urge to prune during the winter. Pruning then may stimulate bud growth, drawing the shrub out of the dormancy it needs to ward off frost.
