Inquirer Southern Luzon Laguna evacuees see revenue from rubbish
WATER LILIES USED TO float on the edges of the Laguna de Bay, but flood spawned by Tropical Storm “Ondoy” last year brought the plants to the streets and houses of lakeside communities in Laguna.
“There were so many of them clinging to our house and clogging the streets,” said Faye Amadeo, who evacuated when Barangay Malaban in Bińan town went underwater.
When the flood began receding, the plants appeared again. This time, however, the residents did not rediscover rubbish but revenue from a strange raw material for woven sandals, baskets, bags, accessories and other household items.
A three-day training sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry at a temporary shelter inside the Sta. Filomena public cemetery in Barangay San Antonio enabled a first batch of 15 women to learn weaving and a new means of livelihood out of water lilies.
They were expected to teach the skill to other women coming from Barangays Malaban and Dela Paz, which were hardest hit by the flood. A total of 471 families from the two villages have been staying in the evacuation center inside the cemetery.
