Over the years here in Southern California, the clivia has become a popular garden plant; many public gardens have groupings of multiple plantings. In my native Holland, it is a much treasured old-fashioned "grandmother's" plant (since practically every family "inherits" offshoots from their grandmother's plant) and is displayed in many a windowsill, showing off its exotic orange trumpet-shaped flowers.
Its rather uninteresting strap-shaped and pointed evergreen leaves grow directly out of its fleshy root system, formed in pairs and in opposite directions. If allowed to grow naturally, it can reach a height of 2 or more feet.
Since its discovery well over a century ago, Clivia miniata has been valued as an undemanding flowering plant that looks impressive, even when not in bloom.
When the clivia is ready to bloom, she produces a thick flower spike from the center of the plant, eventually topped by a cluster of 10 to 15 trumpet-shaped orange-red flowers. After blooming, multiple offshoots emerge at the base of the mother plant, which will produce flowers of their own as they mature. These off-shoots can be left on the mother plant, resulting in a cluster of plants, or can be removed and planted on their own.
