Getting the garden ready for winter
It's that time of year again - time to get your garden and yard cleaned up and ready for winter.
Extension Horticulturist Yvonne McCormick said that if you take care of a few steps, it will be easier in the spring.
"Preparing your garden for winter is really just cleaning up your garden for spring," she said.
Here are a few tips to get your garden winterized.
Clean off debris - That means the old plant material. "The purpose of doing this is to reduce over wintering of garden pests, fungal spores and diseases. Get that out of your garden and dispose of it," McCormick said. Remember not to put any diseased plant material on a compost pile because it won't get hot enough to destroy the disease or insect pest.
Weeds in your garden - "If you have weeds going to seed in your garden, and you don't have time to get out there, what I would recommend is taking pruning shears and prune off those seed heads," she said. McCormick said that if you don't get anything else done this fall, that is one thing that will save you a lot of headaches in the spring with all the weeds that can pop up.
