VARANASI: When Ashok Patel, a native of Madarwa, started marigold plantation in Samneghat on the banks of the holy Ganga a couple of years ago, it did not attract enough attention with most of the villagers turning down the idea as a risk not worth taking.Now, a number of villagers, mainly farmers and some boatmen residing in the area, are not only involved in the business, most of them are also reaping benefits with rising demand for flowers and garlands in one of the oldest living cities of the world, which is also believed to be the religious and cultural capital of the country.
Floriculture that involves plantation of flowering plants is fast catching up in the city of temples with rising demand for different varieties of flowers for various occasions.
