Report: Westmorland Horticultural Society Show 2011
CHANGES at a South Lakeland show were hailed a success by organisers.
Despite being changed from a two-day to a one day event, the annual Westmorland Horticultural Society Show still managed to attract more than 900 entries.
And growers also had to contend with high winds that threatened to ruin exhibits in the run-up to the show in the Kirkland Hall, Kendal.
Chairman Rod Holmes explained that the move to make it a one-day show was because of rising costs and a lack of support.
“It’s just a sign of the times,” said Mr Holmes. “I don’t think it’s just flower shows struggling – there is so much else going on with television and things like that.
“We’ve had people from places like Preston and Ingleton so by having the event on one day, I think it helps the people from further afield to enjoy the show in one sitting.”
Kendal mayor Jonathan Brook opened proceedings for the 77th show.
“I can see a lot of fantastic entries and I’m glad to see the weather hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of all our participants,” he said.
