Think of fall as a fresh start for next spring

This is the month in Ontario when we begin to put our gardens to bed.

Often it's overwhelming to know where to begin with your fall garden cleanup. I start by looking at my garbage calendar to find the weeks when yard and garden waste will be picked up in my neighborhood.

The calendar gives me a deadline to have my entire waste ready to go.

I've created a list to help me keep on track:

Pull out annuals killed by frost.

Continue to water trees and perennials until the ground freezes.

Plant garlic for a spring harvest.

Pot up herbs for indoor growth.

Plant amaryllis bulbs for Christmas colour.

Drench plants, both leaves and soil, before being brought inside after a season outdoors with a soap solution to eliminate bugs.

Save seed for next year.

Store clay and terra cotta containers in a dry protected area such as a shed or garage to prevent freezing and cracking.

Continue to remove weeds to prevent seeds, insects and diseases from overwintering.
