The key to dairy success lies under your feet
North Yorkshire milk producer John Cook is ever mindful of the fact that probably the most valuable asset he will pass on to the next generation is the soil he farms.
In his case, it is largely boulder clay in a 30-inch rainfall area and entirely down to grass – apart from a four hectares (10-acres) red clover ‘trial’. Hence his increasing interest in doing what he can to maximise the performance of his swards while seeking to improve, where necessary, the structure and nutrient status of the soil.
With his wife Catriona, son Roger and two full-time employees, Mr Cook is milking around 300 cows on 136ha (340-acres) at Burgate Farm in Harwood Dale, near Scarborough, and is a comparatively new member of the British Grassland Society (BGS).
Open day“I went to an open day in Shropshire and was impressed. I felt this was an organisation I should be involved with, given what I am trying to do here,” he says.
“Grass is the main consideration here, and you have to have good grass if you farm in this part of the country. I think all dairy farmers need to be aware just how important the soil and the grass it grows are to the long-term future of their business.”
